Thanks to a strong coalition of Atlanta food system leaders and advocates, the City of Atlanta’s Urban Agriculture Ordinance was passed in 2014. This ordinance helped lay the groundwork for Atlanta to become a national leader in urban agriculture. In 2015 Mayor Kasim Reed appointed the first Urban Agriculture Director in the country, and announced an ambitious goal: to ensure that healthy food is within a .5 mile of 75% of Atlanta residents by 2020. The Urban Agriculture Director works with community partners to continue to evolve city policies and help leverage the impact urban agriculture can have in creating a more resilient city.
