Forest Restoration in the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill
Help with ongoing care of the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill. Our focus at this project is removing the aggressively growing plants to help promote a healthy plant community. Activities include hand-pulling and cutting plants such as Chinese privet, English ivy, bamboo, and more. We recommend long sleeves in addition to long pants to help protect your arms from poison ivy and scratchy plants.
Trees Atlanta prioritizes the health and safety of our volunteers and staff. Volunteers must observe the following precautions:
Masks are recommended for unvaccinated volunteers when they are working within 6 feet of another person. Please bring a mask with you so you'll have it ready if someone requests you wear it.
Exercise social distancing of a minimum of 6 feet (please strive for 12 feet or more)
Additional personal hygiene requirements:
Cover coughs and sneezes with elbows
Refrain from touching one's face
Wear hair up or wear a hat to reduce face touching
If you experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to an individual with COVID-19, please stay home until you have completed your recommended quarantine
If you feel ill during the volunteer project, please go home
By volunteering at this project, you are participating on your own accord and accept possible risks associated with interacting with other people
Requirements
This project is best for ages 12 and up. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Volunteers who are 16-17 are allowed to attend without a parent/legal guardian present if they bring a signed waiver with them to the project.
Physical activity such as bending, lifting, and kneeling is required.
Liability Release
All volunteers must agree to this liability waiver when registering for this project. Please read the agreement carefully and select 'yes' on this field when registering.
Need Court-Ordered Community Service Credit?
If you are interested in receiving court-ordered community service hours you must first fill out Trees Atlanta's Community Service Request Form on our website. We will approve or deny your application based on the nature of your offense. You are not eligible to receive court-ordered community service hours until you are approved.
Weather
Projects happen rain or shine, so please check the weather beforehand and come prepared. We will cancel projects if inclement weather such as lightning occurs and is forecasted to persist for the duration of the project. Because weather is sometimes unpredictable, the decision to cancel is typically made at the project start time. We will contact you via email if we choose to cancel in advance.
What to wear and bring with you
Gloves and mask: Bring your own cloth face covering and work gloves.
Required clothing: Long pants and long sleeves are required to protect your skin from irritation. All volunteers need closed-toed shoes or boots, clothes that can get dirty.
Allergy medication: If you've experienced life-threatening allergic reactions to insects, please come prepared with your own emergency medicine, such as an auto-injector or oral medication. Please notify the coordinator of your need for medication in the case of an allergic attack.
Tools: Trees Atlanta provides necessary tools, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer to not share with other volunteers. Any of the following tools would be helpful: hand weeders, hand saws, hand pruners, loppers.
Drinking water: We strongly recommend you bring drinking water in reusable containers. No one-time-use plastic bottles, please.
You may also want: Sunscreen and bug spray as needed, snacks as needed (Trees Atlanta will not provide any of these items).
