Grow and Learn: Grafting Edible Pears onto Ornamental Trees

Participants will learn the theory and basics of grafting. Simple techniques such as whip-and-tongue grafts, as well as more advanced cleft and bark grafting will also be discussed. We will cover the importance of monitoring and aftercare of your fruit tree grafts. Participants will then assist in grafting pear trees in the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill.

If you have them, please bring light work gloves (dexterity is important) and water. If you have a grafting knife, please bring it.

Schedule for the Day:

  • 9-9:30am: Check-In and Welcome at Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill (UFFBM)

  • 9:30-10:30am: UFFBM Introduction and history; Grafting Instruction and practice.

  • 10:30am-12pm: Grafting on UFFBM trees: Participants will volunteer in the garden by assisting/practicing grafting techniques on callery pear stumps and saplings in the orachard. Attendees may opt to stay longer if they would like with Community Foodscapes.

Mike McCord is a Permaculture Designer, Certified Arborist, Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, and holds a degree in Agriculture from UGA. Mike previously worked with Trees Atlanta for 5 years and managed the Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill. He now manages the edible landscaping company, Community Foodscapes, and their affordable programs such as the Anti-Ivy League and Edible Neighborhood.

Dave Horton is a permaculture enthusiast who has successfully grafted many trees. He designs and installs edible landscaping for Community Foodscapes.

Additional Event Information:

  • Ages 12 - Adult (Youth between the ages of 12 - 17 must have an adult attend with them.)

  • Wear: Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.

  • Bring: Bring water, hand pruners, loppers, and gloves if you have them.

  • Safety: Read our Safety Protocols for participants, including our COVID-19 precautions.

  • Parking: Parking is limited; Please carpool as much as possible. Parking is available in a small lot at the front of UFFBM.
